2015: was it a special year to
your books for you?
2015 has been a special year for me. Last year The Last Pilgrim/De doden hebben geen verhaal won the Norwegian
Riverton Award and the Scandinavian Glass Key in 2014, and the following
success of the book made it possible for me to take a one-year-leave from my
job in the Ministry of Defence this year. So in 2015 I have been a full-time
writer. During the first part of 2015 I finished the manuscript for my second
novel, Hell was open, which was
published in Norway in August and AW Bruna was the first foreign publisher to
buy the rights!
Did you read a lot yourself this
year and what amount should we think of?
Finally, I have had the time to read a little more than I usually do, I
have probably read one or two books per month this year, both crime
novels/thrillers and 'ordinary' fiction.
What books did you find amazing?
It takes a lot to impress me, so in the crime novel/thriller segment - I
think the re-reading of Thomas Harris’ Red
Dragon and Ken Follet’s “The Eye of the Needle” came closest to being
“amazing”.
Was there a book you did not like
and if there was, why?
There was probably a number of books that I did not like, but I don’t
want to mention one in particular. I know that there is a lot of work writing a
book and I respect the effort made by every writer. If I find a book
disappointing, it always has to do with the lack of interesting and
well-developed characters and superficial language, and “telling” instead of
“showing”. I don’t want to be underestimated as a reader, I want to be
challenged. I think that too many writers, especially in the thriller/crime
novel genre, tend to underestimate their readers. Readers are smart and can
think for themselves when reading a novel, they don’t have to be told
everything. There are so many books published, at least in Norway, so the
quality in practice is more or less deemed to go down.
What can we expect from you in
2016?
In 2016 I will hopefully publish the third book in the Tommy Bergmann
series. According to the current plan it is due to come out in August and I
have my fingers crossed for that to happen. Closer to summer I will start to
write the fourth book in the series, I have already sketched out a plot that looks
fine!

was een special jaar voor mij. Vorig jaar won De doden hebben geen verhaal de Noorse Riverton-prijs en de
Scandinavisch Glass Key in 2014. Het succes dat daarop volgde maakte het voor
mij mogelijk om een jaartje vrij te nemen te nemen van mijn werk bij het
Ministerie van Defensie. In 2015 heb ik dus fulltime geschreven. In de eerste
helft van het jaar heb ik het manuscript afgerond van mijn tweede boek, Hell was open. Het is in augustus in
Noorwegen verschenen en AW Bruna heeft als eerste buitenlandse uitgeverij de
rechten gekocht!
Ik
had eindelijk de tijd om eens wat meer te lezen dan dat ik normaal gesproken
doe. Ik denk dat ik dit jaar een of twee boeken per maand gelezen heb. Zowel
thrillers als 'gewone' fictie.
Je
moet van goede huize komen om indruk op mij te maken. Wat betreft de thrillers
komen Red Dragon van Thomas Harris en
Het oog van de naald van Ken Follet
het meest in de buurt van 'geweldig'.
Er
zijn wel een aantal boeken die ik niks vond, maar ik ga er niet specifiek één
noemen. Ik weet dat er een hoop werk zit in het schrijven van een boek en ik
respecteer elke moeite die door welke schrijver dan ook is genomen dat te doen.
Als een boek wat mij betreft teleurstellend is, ligt dat aan het gebrek aan
interessante en ontwikkelde personages, oppervlakkig taalgebruik en als alles 'voor
de hand ligt'. Ik wil als lezer niet onderschat worden, ik wil uitgedaagd
worden. Ik denk dat teveel schrijvers, en dan vooral in het thrillergenre, de
neiging hebben hun lezers te onderschatten. Lezers zijn slim en ze kunnen echt
zelf nadenken tijdens het lezen, je moet ze niet alles voorkauwen. Er komen
zoveel boeken uit, in Noorwegen althans, dat de kwaliteit steeds minder lijkt
te worden.
In
2016 komt hopelijk mijn derde boek in de Tommy Bergmann-serie uit. Als alles
volgens plan verloopt, komt het uit in augustus. Ergens richting zomer ga ik
beginnen aan het vierde boek in de serie. Ik heb inmiddels een plot uitgetekend
wat er wat mij betreft prima uit ziet!
